Hello again! Today we are going to talk through the steps to a beautiful, simple updo. This updo is great for a special event, a classy soiree, or just a day when you have dirty hair and want to look pretty!
Step one, start with slightly dirty hair- you can use freshly washed hair, but an updo does work best on the day after you shampoo (second-day hair).
Use dry shampoo to soak up the oils at the scalp and add some texture. I love Aveda Shampure Dry Shampoo- it has a great texture and it’s completely dry because it’s actually a powder.
Next, use a tail comb to backcomb the entire head, starting with the mohawk section. Take half-inch to one-inch subsections and backcomb the two inches of hair closest to the scalp. Backcomb the sides of the hair as well.
Smooth back the hair away from the face by combing it gently back and using your hands. gather the top half into a clear elastic. gather the bottom half in it’s own ponytail.
Twist the top ponytail into a bun and pin it down with bobby pins. Gently pull the bun apart and pin it down with hair pins. I recommend using professional bobby pins, which you can find at Sally Beauty or on Amazon. They are quite a bit stronger than the pins you can find in drugstores.
Twist the second ponytail into a bun in the same direction as the first and pin it down. Gently pull the bun apart to give it texture and width. Use hair pins to tuck in any loose ends sticking out of the buns. Move the buns and adjust if the buns are too close or too far apart.
Use a strong hold hairspray to set the updo in place. I like Aveda Control Force Hairspray for setting updos. It gives a slightly crispy finish and holds the style well. Gently pat down any fly-aways while spraying to give the updo a polished look.
Now you have an elegant updo that is simple and beautiful! Give it a try and let me know how it goes! Any questions or comments? Please leave them below!
